About Katherine West Health Board

Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is a community-led Aboriginal health service delivering integrated primary healthcare, family support, and wellbeing programs across a vast 162,000 km² footprint in the NT — spanning from the WA border to the edge of the Tanami Desert.

Our work goes beyond clinics. It’s grounded in Aboriginal cultural values, self-determination, and a belief in holistic care — where healing includes the spiritual, cultural, emotional, and social dimensions of wellbeing.

We’re known for our welcoming and supportive teams, with people who genuinely collaborate to improve outcomes for the communities they serve. We value inclusion, connection, and creating spaces where people feel respected and safe — and where you’ll be backed from day one.

This isn't just a job. It's an opportunity to become part of a community-focused organisation that is making a meaningful difference in the lives of Aboriginal women, children and families across the Katherine West region.

More Than Midwifery

Working alongside another Midwife & Women's Health Practitioner, you'll share a caseload of approximately 50–65 maternal health clients each year. You'll have the valuable opportunity to build strong relationships with women and families before, during and after pregnancy, providing continuity of care at one of the most important times in their lives.

Unlike many traditional midwifery roles, there is also a strong focus on women's primary healthcare. This unique opportunity allows you to support women through different stages of life while practising across a broader scope, including maternal health, contraception, cervical screening, health education and preventative care.

Alongside providing care, you'll help strengthen healthcare capability across remote communities, working with local primary healthcare teams to improve maternal and women's health outcomes for years to come.

You'll be supported by a highly experienced maternal and child health team, including our Ngumbin/Yapa Strong Beginnings Cultural Liaison Officers, who play a vital role in building community connections and delivering culturally secure care.

Whether you're looking for a new challenge in the Northern Territory, considering a move from interstate, or exploring opportunities from abroad, this role offers the chance to combine meaningful clinical practice with community connection, professional growth and lasting impact.

Your Impact

KWHB is looking for a full-time Midwife & Women's Health Practitioner to join our Strong Beginnings team based in Katherine, NT, with regular travel across remote communities throughout the Katherine West region.

Reporting to the Manager Strong Beginnings, you'll work collaboratively with women, families, our Strong Beginnings Cultural Liaison Officers, primary healthcare teams and external providers to deliver high-quality, culturally safe maternal and women's healthcare services.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing clinical care to women throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period
  • Delivering broader women's health services, education and preventative care
  • Building strong and trusted relationships with women, families and communities
  • Working alongside remote healthcare teams to strengthen maternal health capability
  • Coordinating care with hospitals, specialists and multidisciplinary providers
  • Supporting community education and health promotion initiatives
  • Contributing to improved maternal, infant and women's health outcomes across the region

Let's Talk About You

To qualify, you will need registration as a Registered Nurse/Midwife or Registered Midwife with AHPRA. Previous experience working in maternal and women's health will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and experience will be highly valued:

  • Dual registration as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife
  • Experience working in remote, rural or community healthcare settings
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities
  • Women's health experience including contraception, cervical screening and preventative care
  • Health promotion, education or workforce development experience
  • Endorsed Midwife registration, or progression towards endorsement

As our ideal candidate, you'll be someone who enjoys building meaningful relationships and working alongside communities. You'll bring a collaborative, adaptable and culturally respectful approach, with the ability to balance quality care with the realities of delivering services across a large and diverse region.

This role would suit a professional looking for something more than a hospital-based position — someone who values continuity of care, enjoys community engagement, and wants to contribute to long-term improvements in maternal and women's health outcomes.

What You'll Get

In addition to a competitive salary package from $123,716 + 12% super, you'll enjoy a range of benefits including:

  • Salary packaging opportunities
  • Travel allowance
  • Relocation assistance
  • Accommodation and travel support when working remotely
  • Generous professional development allowance
  • Clinical supervision and mentoring
  • Flexible working arrangements considered for the right candidate
  • Structured onboarding and community orientation support
  • Working alongside an experienced and highly supportive multidisciplinary team
  • The opportunity to experience some of Australia's most unique and culturally rich landscapes and communities
  • Meaningful work that creates genuine impact for women, families and future generations

If you're passionate about Aboriginal health, women's health, and relationship-based care, and want to be part of an organisation where culture, community and connection matter, we encourage you to apply today.

Your New Home

The Big Rivers region (a 3 hour drive from Darwin) begins south of Kakadu National Park encompassing Pine Creek, then extends over 500km south to Kalkaringi and stretches across the width of the Territory between the Western Australia and Queensland borders. The region is significant in scale, covering over 360,000 square kilometres and accounting for an area greater than that covered by Germany. The region consists of a number of varied natural environments including vast rivers, tropical forests, rocky escarpments and savannah plains.

With eight national parks and reserves throughout the region, as well as five main river systems, this is a truly unique part of the world that many will never get to see. If you're looking for authentic cultural and historical attractions, as well as an outdoor lifestyle that showcases the natural wonders of the Australian outback, look no further.
