About Katherine West Health Board

Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is a community-led Aboriginal health service delivering integrated primary healthcare, family support, and wellbeing programs across a vast 162,000 km² footprint in the NT — spanning from the WA border to the edge of the Tanami Desert.

Our work goes beyond clinics. It's grounded in Aboriginal cultural values, self-determination, and a belief in holistic care — where healing includes the spiritual, cultural, emotional, and social dimensions of wellbeing.

We're known for our welcoming and supportive teams, with people who genuinely collaborate to improve outcomes for the communities they serve. We value inclusion, connection, and creating spaces where people feel respected and safe — and where you'll be backed from day one.

This isn't just a job. It's an opportunity to be part of a community-focused organisation making a meaningful difference in the lives of Aboriginal people and families across the Katherine West region.

More Than a Project Officer Role

This role brings together three connected programs under our Access and Inclusion team: Safe Stays, which supports people experiencing homelessness in Katherine to access safe accommodation and return to their home communities; Living Proud, which supports people to maintain their tenancy and live safely on country; and Healthy Homes, which supports people through audits, advocacy and education to improve the home for good health.

It's genuinely impactful work — KWHB is contracted to support 270 individuals through Safe Stays and a further 207 through Living Proud each year, and every one of those numbers is a person you'll help move toward stability.

You'll work under the close guidance of our Safe Stays and Living Proud Coordinator, and won't be doing this alone, you'll be buddied up with an experienced team member for community visits from the outset, building your confidence and connections at your own pace.

Your Impact

Reporting to the Manager Access and Inclusion, and working under the guidance of our Safe Stays and Living Proud Coordinator, you'll provide culturally safe, client-centred support to Aboriginal people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. You'll split your time roughly evenly between Katherine and remote communities (around two weeks per month), travelling by road and light aircraft.

Key responsibilities:

  • Case management and culturally safe support for clients experiencing homelessness in Katherine
  • Managing client intake fairly against program eligibility criteria
  • Helping clients access safe temporary accommodation through advocacy and referral
  • Liaising with accommodation providers to ensure culturally secure service delivery
  • Coordinating transport for clients' safe return home
  • Conducting Healthy Homes audits and educating clients on healthy homes
  • Supporting clients to access welfare payments and financial support
  • Working with housing and environmental health teams to resolve tenancy issues
  • Building relationships with local services, community organisations and government agencies
  • Maintaining accurate, confidential client records

Your New Home

The Big Rivers region (a 3 hour drive from Darwin) begins south of Kakadu National Park encompassing Pine Creek, then extends over 500km south to Kalkaringi and stretches across the width of the Territory between the Western Australia and Queensland borders. The region is significant in scale, covering over 360,000 square kilometres and accounting for an area greater than that covered by Germany. The region consists of a number of varied natural environments including vast rivers, tropical forests, rocky escarpments and savannah plains.

With eight national parks and reserves throughout the region, as well as five main river systems, this is a truly unique part of the world that many will never get to see. If you're looking for authentic cultural and historical attractions, as well as an outdoor lifestyle that showcases the natural wonders of the Australian outback, look no further.
