Shaping Healthy Futures for Children

Katherine West Health Board is looking for a full-time Child Health Nurse based in Katherine, NT, with regular remote travel to KWHB communities — typically one week in Katherine followed by one week in community, travelling by road and light aircraft. Reporting to the Manager, Strong Beginnings, you will drive strong health outcomes for children and young people aged 5 to 17, working closely with the Strong Beginnings for Strong Families nurses, Primary Health Care teams, family support services and schools to deliver a population health approach to child health across the region. You'll be paired with an experienced child health nurse as you find your feet, so there's no expectation of running a full caseload in week one.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Delivering high-quality, evidence-based primary health care to children and young people aged 5 to 17 and their families, including routine health checks, developmental assessments and early intervention
  • Increasing the number and quality of health assessments across the region, strengthening child health surveillance and recall systems
  • Ensuring timely delivery of immunisations in line with the NT Childhood Vaccination Schedule, including catch-up programs and follow-up of overdue children
  • Identifying and responding to emerging health issues in young people, including mental health, substance use, sexual health and protective behaviours
  • Working in culturally secure ways alongside Aboriginal Health Practitioners and community-based staff to empower children, young people and families
  • Working closely with the Strong Beginnings for Strong Families nurses to ensure smooth transitions of care for children turning five
  • Providing clinical leadership and guidance to Primary Health Care staff on identifying, treating and managing child health conditions
  • Leading multidisciplinary case conferencing for high-risk children and young people, and meeting mandatory reporting obligations
  • Building effective partnerships with family support services, early years services and schools for a coordinated approach to child health
  • Planning and delivering community health education in line with the KWHB Health Promotion Strategy
