Established in 1998, Katherine West Health Board is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation that provides a range of clinical, preventative and public health services to clients in the Katherine West Region of the Northern Territory. With four major health care centres and a range of satellite centres, KWHB services an area over two times the size of Tasmania (162,000km²), helping to improve the health and wellbeing of some of the most remote communities in Australia.

Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is currently looking for a Cancer Support Aboriginal Health Practitioner / Registered Nurse This position is well suited to someone with a minimum 2 years' experience working in remote Aboriginal health, ideally in cancer care or chronic disease.With an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities.

Position Description

Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Deliver cancer screening promotion and education, supporting participation in national screening programs (bowel, cervical, breast, lung and others) and reducing barriers through targeted community education.
  • Conduct community health promotion activities, such as yarning circles, forums, and awareness campaigns, in partnership with Health Promotion Officers and other team members
  • Offer emotional and practical support throughout the cancer journey, including appointment reminders, transport coordination, access to support services, and other social support services.
  • Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, including remote clinical teams, cancer specialists, and support service providers, to deliver integrated, personcentered care.
  • Provide staff education and capacity building on the cancer journey, including the stages of screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care, to enhance culturally safe and coordinated cancer care across the organisation.

The Cancer Support Aboriginal Health Practitioner/Registered Nurse (AHP/RN) supports Aboriginal clients and families across the cancer continuum; screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.
