Established in 1998, Katherine West Health Board is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation that provides a range of clinical, preventative and public health services to clients in the Katherine West Region of the Northern Territory. With four major health care centres and a range of satellite centres, KWHB services an area over two times the size of Tasmania (162,000km²), helping to improve the health and wellbeing of some of the most remote communities in Australia.

Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is currently looking for a Remote Aboriginal Workforce Mentor. This position is well suited to someone with a minimum qualification of Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice and eligibility for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner. With an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities.

Position Description

The Remote Aboriginal Workforce Mentor role is important in providing support, education, training and coordinating professional development for Aboriginal Health Practitioner trainees and Aboriginal Health Coaches. The role facilitates positive relationships between clinic-based staff, travelling program staff, external providers, AHPs and AHCs (including trainees) 

Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Identify, plan and facilitate the learning and development needs of AHPs and AHCs (including trainees) in remote locations. This includes facilitating clinic in-services and the provision of support on site during placement periods and throughout the post-graduate program.
  • Facilitating engagement between the AHPs and AHCs (including trainees) and community to build trust and strong relationships through community engagement events and modelling culturally safe client engagement practices.
  • Provide professional support to all students (including trainees) as appropriate, offering individualised mentoring based on each student s specific needs.
  • Mentor and role model a positive learning culture in our remote health centres.
  • Ongoing technology-based support and training in relevant software such as Communicare and Donesafe.
  • Help foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary practices and team-oriented processes.
