Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) provides primary health care and health-related programs to Aboriginal communities over a 162,000 km2 region in the remote Katherine West region. We are an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation with the key objective of improving health and wellbeing outcomes for all people in our region. KWHB recognises that health and wellbeing is holistic, and we are committed to providing evidence-based programs that support all aspects of health – including spiritual, cultural, emotional and family wellbeing.

The Transition to Remote Practice (TtRP) is a program for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Aboriginal Health Practitioners (AHPs) who are new to remote area practice. The course is designed to prepare participants for remote practice by utilising existing experience and providing the necessary skills and knowledge to transition into a nursing role with KWHB.

The course has been developed to support RNs and AHPs who are wanting to gain more experience in remote nursing with the view in progressing their career to a remote setting. The course is 12 weeks in total with the initial 2 weeks being intensive, face-to-face classroom learning and the remaining 10 as practical learning, working across two of our Remote Health Centres. Successful applicants will be supported and taught throughout the course by our Remote Area Mentor and Educator and experienced Remote Area Nurses.

Applications will be assessed as they are received, and the opportunity will close on 16 June 2026, or earlier if suitable candidates are selected.

The program will commence on 29 June 2026, in Katherine NT.

Applicants are required to provide a copy of their up-to-date CV and a one-page cover letter that outlines relevant experience and career aspirations. Shortlisted applicants will be required to participate in an interview and provide two references who are currently or have previously been a direct line manager in a relevant role.
Places are limited to three in total and will be filled as applications are received.

The successful candidate will enjoy an attractive remuneration RN3.1 $123.716 per annum, plus 12% superannuation, as well as a range of benefits which include:

  • Salary packaging
  • 6 weeks accruable annual leave
  • Thorough workplace training and orientation
  • Fantastic professional development opportunities

The Big Rivers region (a 3 hour drive from Darwin) begins south of Kakadu National Park encompassing Pine Creek, then extends over 500km south to Kalkaringi and stretches across the width of the Territory between the Western Australia and Queensland borders. The region is significant in scale, covering over 360,000 square kilometres and accounting for an area greater than that covered by Germany. The region consists of a number of varied natural environments including vast rivers, tropical forests, rocky escarpments and savannah plains.

With eight national parks and reserves throughout the region, as well as five main river systems, this is a truly unique part of the world that many will never get to see. If you're looking for authentic cultural and historical attractions, as well as an outdoor lifestyle that showcases the natural wonders of the Australian outback, look no further.
