Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) provides primary health care and health-related programs to Aboriginal communities over a 162,000km2 region in the remote Katherine West region. We are seeking Remote Area Nurses (RANs) to work within the Lajamanu Urgent Care Centre (LUCC), supporting an innovative model of afterhours service delivery in a remote setting.
Summary of Position
The RAN LUCC role operates on a rostered, FIFO arrangement from Darwin or Katherine to Lajamanu, with a 14:14 (night) roster. Flights and accommodation are provided while on rotation. Operating during the hours of 2200–0700, the role enhances access to culturally safe, best-practice clinical services for community members in a very remote location. Each rotation consists of 7 active shifts and 7 passive shifts, ensuring comprehensive coverage and flexibility to meet community needs. Successful applicants must be adaptable to remote living conditions and working night shifts, while demonstrating a strong commitment to cultural respect, sensitivity, and collaborative engagement with the local community.
Several opportunities with immediate start dates are available, including short-term and long-term contracts. Applicants from interstate requiring travel support to Darwin will be considered.

Position DescriptionYour responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Provide quality, person-centred health care to individuals, families, and the community within own competency level, KWHB protocols, and the CARPA Manual.
- Efficiently and effectively manage clinical procedures and workflows to meet client needs.
- Triage all patients presenting to Urgent Care with comprehensive and accurate nursing assessments and take appropriate action for clients requiring escalation due to emergencies or deteriorating conditions.
- Work collaboratively with health professionals and staff to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to health care.
- Maintain flexibility and adaptability in response to the dynamic Urgent Care environment.
- Support and participate in Quality Improvement activities to enhance safety and care effectiveness.
- Engage in professional development, team orientation, and training opportunities in consultation with management to promote effective teamwork and continuous learning.
To be considered for these positions, you are required to minimally have the following experience:
- Prior and recent experience as a RAN.
- Up to date Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Maternity Emergency Care (MEC)
- Remote Emergency Care (REC)
Applicants must be willing and able to travel to and from Lajamanu via light aircraft or 4WD.
Successful applicants will be employed under the JIRNTANGKU MIYRTA ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT 2024 - 2028 as Shift Workers, classified between RN3.1-RN3.4 dependent on skills and experience, receiving an attractive remuneration of $9,873 + 12% superannuation minimum, per swing.
