Established in 1998, Katherine West Health Board is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation that provides a range of clinical, preventative and public health services to clients in the Katherine West Region of the Northern Territory. With four major health care centres and a range of satellite centres, KWHB services an area over two times the size of Tasmania (162,000km²), helping to improve the health and wellbeing of some of the most remote communities in Australia.

Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is currently looking for a Midwife and Womens Health Practitioner this position is suited to someone who is a Registered Nurse/Midwife or Registered Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority (AHPRA). Has experience in maternal and women’s health, with proven ability to provide clinical leadership and program oversight, with understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities. 

A key component of the role is building the confidence, capability and clinical capacity of remote primary health care staff to undertake antenatal and postnatal checks, support continuity of care, and strengthen local service delivery.

Position Description

Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide comprehensive and timely antenatal and postnatal care to women and families in accordance with best practice guidelines, ensuring care is culturally safe, trauma-informed and woman-centred.
  • Provide ongoing case management and care coordination for antenatal and postnatal clients, including monitoring high-risk women and infants, participating in case conferencing, ensuring follow-up care is completed, supporting transitions between services and jurisdictions, and coordinating referrals and communication with relevant health providers to maintain continuity of care.
  • Provide ongoing education to build the skills and confidence of the KWHB primary health care teams to undertake antenatal and postnatal checks and provide ongoing maternal and women’s health support within remote communities with approved resources.
  • Work collaboratively with Cultural Liaison Officers, families and communities to advocate for culturally safe pregnancy, birthing and postnatal care practices.
  • Deliver women’s health services including contraception education and support, cervical screening, sexual and reproductive health education, and preventative health interventions.
